A thorough examination of your mouth is necessary before any treatment can be started. To (1) determine why your teeth are not as white as before and assess the chances of success and (2) recommend the best whitening method for you and monitor the results of the treatment.<\/p>\n

Some restorations, especially if located in the front of the mouth, may need to be replaced after whitening to ensure they match the new tooth color, since fillings do not whiten.<\/p>\n

Whitening techniques include (1) at home whitening using custom trays, (2) over the counter whitening agents. There are pros and cons to each method and we would be happy to recommend the ideal one for you. The most frequent side effects are temporary tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums. Expectant or nursing women should wait until after their pregnancy or nursing period before having their teeth whitened. Children under age twelve should not use teeth whitening products.<\/p>\n

Whitening toothpastes, mouthwashes and chewing gums only eliminate surface stains and do not alter tooth color.

What to do for the next few days: We recommend, as much as you can, to avoid \u201cstaining\u201d substances for 48 hours. This includes: red wine or dye coloured drinks, colas, berries, coffee, smoking, etc. If you absolutely must have any of the above drinks (such as coffee), try drinking through a straw, which helps to minimize the contact with your front teeth.To help reduce any post\u2010treatment sensitivity, we recommend that you brush gently for a minute with a fluoride\u2010relief toothpaste (e.g. sensodyne).

Only a small amount of gel is needed in each tray. If you are very, very sensitive then do the whitening every second day. You may (and should) use the touch up bleach on a regular basis, as often as once every 3 to 6 months for 1-3 applications (each usage being for 60-90 minutes). Your whitening needs will determine how often you require home whitening.
